Chapter Five

So, Steven came into the Police Station on Monday morning just as he had previously planned to do. It seemed that not one of the other constables and office staff from the other shifts even noticed that he was there on a day off, it was either that or they never really cared as they probably assumed that he was there to work on some files he wanted to close before his supervisor came down on him, which might actually be a good idea. It was as if this was perfectly normal for police to want to be there on their off days. As he was a bit early, he went to review the crime stats over the past few days and was shocked to see that there was a break and enter at Janet’s home that was reported this past Saturday. Steven went to a computer to review the file to see what he could learn. It seems it had occurred between five in the afternoon on Friday and eight in the morning on Saturday two days prior. The constables who attended her home had noted in their report that the only thing that seemed missing was the computer from her desk. There was nothing else that appeared to be taken or even seemed out of place to the attending constable. Of course, Steven had the computer at his home, so he brought up the digital file and saw that it did link to his file. He noted this piece of information on both files so that the missing computer’s location is known and that it will no longer be listed as possibly stolen. He worried that he could be in trouble for having the computer but figured that the ends justified the means and he would worry about that at a later time. Of course, being a probationary constable, this did worry him too.

By about 9:00 that morning he decided it was time to give Robert a phone call down at the RCMP Criminal Intelligence Program office. Many officers were now out on the road at this time, so it was easy for him to find an available desk that offered a small amount of privacy. He looked up the number he had phoned just the other day, and it was picked up on the second ring. He asked to speak to Robert and a moment later, the two were on the phone line together.

“Robert, this is Steven Browne here from the Prince George Detachment. We spoke last week.”

“Steven, yes I recall talking to you the other day. How are things in the Great White North doing? You know I started my RCMP carrier in Prince George too.”

“Was it as cold then as it is now?”

“Colder; how have you been doing?”

I am doing pretty good. But there was a strange turn to this situation. I thought I would run it by you.”

“Okay, talk to me, I am all ears. Then I will tell you about my experience in Prince George.
